Fashionably Late review
POP-ROCK | New pop/rock band Honor Society surprised a lot of people when it opened for the Jonas Brothers’ world tour this summer – offering up decent hooks and great musicianship, sort of a look at the next step the brothers might take musically.
The band continued to surprise with its concurrent Full Moon Crazy tour in clubs in the same cities the Jonases played, showing it could carry a whole show by itself.
Now Honor Society offers up another surprise with its debut CD, “Fashionably Late,” out today.
The disc’s 12 songs capture the same arena pop the band played at the Jonas shows – in fact, the songs “Full Moon Crazy,” “Don’t Close the Book” and the first single “See U In The Dark” were played at those shows.
The band’s sound falls somewhere between 1980s new wave and popular radio pop/rock, incorporating synths with guitars and drums. But it often shines more on the slower songs, which let its musical savvy show through.
The disc’s centerpiece and the best song is “Goodnight My Love,” a guitar-and-strings goodbye song and showcase for singer Michael Bruno’s higher range. And while the lyrics are no Dylan poems, they’re decent. “My Own Way” and “Don’t Close The Book,” two other slower but still hooky songs, also are winners.
But the harder hooks also work: “Sing 4 U” -- with synths and handclaps -- and, especially, the new single, disc opener “Over You,” with rapid-fire lyrics and a good, big beat.
Not every song succeeds. With the disc executive-produced by the Jonas Brothers, there’s a tendency as they did on the recent albums to over-produce. That’s true on the decent “Why Didn’t I” and especially the disc-closing “Rock With You,” a funky synth song that is close to the Michael Jackson tune of the same name. There’s also an over use of bullhorn-distorted lyrics.
But those are minor complaints. With “Fashionably Late,” Honor Society goes immediately to the head of the class.
