As their name implies, the members of Honor Society aren't slackers.
In fact, these openers for the Jonas Brothers are some of the hardest-working dudes in show business.
The New Jersey power-pop act — the first band to be signed to the Jonas Brothers' label, which is distributed by Hollywood Records — is doing its own headlining tour at the same time. That can sometimes mean two and three shows a day. “It's not overwhelming. It's overwhelmingly exciting,” singer and guitarist Michael Bruno said. “We are really working really hard. But it's staying busy doing what you love.”
Honor Society performs twice in San Antonio on Thursday: first at Sunset Station in the morning at the iWin Joe Jonas Fun Run; then at the AT&T Center that night.
Traveling the country in their bright-red tour bus nicknamed “Clifford” (like the dog) is paying off.
The single Where Are You Now is on the Bandslam soundtrack, and the band makes a cameo in the upcoming sequel to Alvin and the Chipmunks.
Drummer Alex Noyes is a former member of the Jonas Brothers touring band. “That's definitely the link that helped put it together,” Noyes said. “But ultimately, the boys, Nick, Kevin and Joe, and the management team really saw potential and talent in the band.”
The young men in Honor Society are older than the Jonas Brothers and rock harder. They often describe themselves as Justin Timberlake fronting a rock band, a combination of pop, rock, urban and R&B influences.
“We came up with (the description). It's a little bit tongue in cheek,” Bruno said. “Justin Timberlake is one of the most successful artists and musicians that's ever lived, so we're not comparing ourselves in any way to Justin. It's just a way for us to say we're making that type of pop music.”
The Jonas Brothers and John Fields are producing Honor Society's debut album, Fashionably Late, which is due Sept. 15.
“They haven't asked us to change our sound. We had a very clear vision of our sound and what we wanted to do before going into the studio,” bassist Andrew Lee said.
“It really is a dream come true,” Lee said. “Every day feels like a landmark day with all these incredible things happening on a daily basis. Yeah, it's happening fast and furious.”
